What is the difference between attending physician and admitting physician
Admitting Physician. Thread starter cchambersmtz Start date Mar 4, Messages 2 Best answers 0. When a physician group of hospitalists employed by the same employer are attending a patient who is in the hospital as inpatient, is it correct to submit the entire claim under the Admitting physician? Or, is the claim supposed to be split and billed separately according to each attending physician day for day? Is there any legal documentation to support the correct way to bill under these circumstances?
I know that we have to bill as if there is only ONE admitting physician because the physicians are of the same specialty and part of the same group but as for Day to Day billing I am uncertain on whether to bill each daily procedure under the Admitting physician all together or to bill according to the attending physician per day.
Our physicians are on schedules so any length of stay past 5 days will have multiple physicians attending the same patient. We have about 25 physicians and 12 hospitals to cover so the scheduling changes quite often. An attending physician is any doctor who has completed their training and been granted privileges to practice independently within the hospital. This distinguishes them from residents and fellows, who require supervision from the attending physician.
A hospitalist is a doctor who only cares for patients while they are in the hospital, and does not provide outpatient or primary care. When the patient is discharged, they follow up with an outpatient clinic or their primary doctor. This is typically the attending on service at the time that the patient is admitted to the hospital. This designation is primarily for billing purposes. Any physicians from the same group as the admitting physician who see the patient on subsequent days must bill under the same service.
Examples: A child is admitted to the general pediatrics floor for RSV. The child stays in the hospital for 2 days, and it also cared for by Dr. B, who works for the same group as Dr. The child is also evaluated by the pulmonologist, Dr.
